5Fabulous B&B owned by Veronique. Lovely warm, clean rooms and a great breakfast. Great location for visiting Cloth Hall and The Menin Gate as well as all surrounding memorials. Very reasonable. Highly recommend.

Chapeau!! Roel en Ellen

4The B&B Hortensia is a quaint and quiet classic B&B with clean and well furnished rooms and a very nice breakfast. We enjoyed 2 nights and it provided the perfect spot for walking into the old city. It's location near the Lille Gate provided a great chance to walk the old walls in and out of the city.

4Enjoyed my second stay in two years and third overall. Hortensia is ideally located near the Lille Gate so it's easy in, easy out. Not too far away is the train station, if that's your means of travel. You're less than ten minutes walk from the busier Grote Markt and Menin Gate too. Underground parking is available for a fee just a few blocks away. The room was spacious for two, though the bathroom, and particularly the shower stall, are tiny...typical of bathrooms in Europe, I find. Nevertheless it was clean and welcoming. There is no air conditioning (for those that it matters to) but a fan was provided to keep any kind of heat at bay. The whole place is generally quiet, except for the early morning traffic passing by on the cobblestones below. Nothing can be done about that but worth mentioning if you're a light sleeper. Consider asking for a room that backs onto the rear of the property or on the upper floor. In your room you'll find a map of the city with recommended places to visit and dine, which comes in handy when you're new to the area or want to try something new. Breakfast is your typical fare; plenty of cereals, meats, cheeses and breads, along with eggs cooked to your liking. Veronique is a welcoming hostess who ensures your needs are met but also leaves you to enjoy your meal. Bagged lunches are available for purchase (though I didn't purchase one) and bicycles can be rented too. This place certainly has it all and I would happily return for a fourth go-round. On a side note, if you're in the area for Great War history, consider visiting Ramparts Cemetery, which is literally around the corner. I had missed it on my previous two visits. Even if you're just a tourist, take a look at this peaceful place along the banks of the river.

4A nice place to stay for a couple of nights. Run by a very friendly lady. Rooms perfectly adequate with en suite facilities. A simple but tasty buffet style breakfast. The only downside is, rooms are reached by very steep and narrow stairs. Completely a no go for disabled guests or those who struggle with stairs. On street parking available. Very close to all the local attractions.

4The room was very clean. It’s about 10 minutes walk from the Menen-poort/city center. Breakfast was excellent. As I was there for business too, thhe drawback was that breakfast started at 8am. For most people this will not be an issue. Would certainly recommend this.
Réponse de Gérant d’entreprise 20 mai 2019Beste Ruben, hartelijke dank voor jouw verblijf en voor jouw eerlijke review op Tripadvisor. 5Excellent B&B near centre of Ypres only 10 mins walk to Menin Gate. Super helpful owner Veronique who made us most welcome and left loads of information for us re parking and places to eat/visit..incidentally the B7B can provide secure undergound parking for a small fee which is located only a short walk from the B&B. Could not fault this place for cleanliness and friendliness ..book with confidence you will not be disappointed.

5What a lovely place to stay to visit Ipres and the western front battlefields. Highly recommended and we will certainly be back for more visits and tours of the battlefields. The breakfast is simple but that’s all you need, lots of local restaurants and bars, so no shortage of amenities around the area.

5We booked two rooms, one for ourselves and one for an adult son. Both were spotless and very comfortable, our own facing the street on the 2nd floor (3rd floor if you are North American), had a small separate sitting area with a table, which was very convenient. Our son's room was on the first floor (2nd if from North America) and equally clean. I would say though if you have mobility issues, the steep and somewhat narrow stairs could be difficult to navigate. We parked a 5 minute walk away for free. Breakfast was copious, varied and absolutely delicious. We had booked a private tour of the area's WW1 war sites through our hosts Veronique and Michael. Lionel, the tour guide was amazing! Veronique packed us a lunch to take along during our four-hour tour, which was a welcome surprise. The location of Hortensia is within walking distance of all of Ypres' main attractions. Five stars, no question.

3We (2 seniors with adult son and granddaughter) had two rooms with twin beds on first floor. On the positive side, the rooms were very clean, the breakfasts great as generally noted elsewhere and we were allowed to check in early, which was a major benefit having arrived early direct from Canada. The caveats which downgraded our overall rating from 4 to 3 stars are as follows: 1. There is very little storage space to unpack. OK if one night with a carry on, otherwise living out of the suitcase. 2. We found the mattress soft and the pillows even softer. It didn't bother our son or granddaughter but at our age we need firm support. 3. The shower temperature control was super sensitive. A very slight adjustment could result in freezing cold or scalding hot. As noted elsewhere, the shower stall is small and it is easy to accidently turn off the water with your body movements against the push on/off knob. Unlike other reviewers,we found the water pressure low. 4. We pre-booked secured parking but didn't realize it was not adjacent to the property but a 5 to 10 minutes walk. Not so bad if it is not raining and you are only using it for overnight parking. More disconcerting is that the assigned space is two levels below ground in an old building with very tight narrow ramps. It took two of us to maneuver our standard size rental down the second ramp. The signs on the walls indicated that there were many mishaps. I have not found any similar concerns among the posted reviews, so mine may be an outlier. Also, the caveats as noted may not be issues that concern you. In such case, you shouldn't be disappointed.

4Stayed in Ypres with my son for 5 days. The B&B is situated on one of the main entrances of Ypres, walking distance to everything you would want to see or visit! A free park and ride is located very close to the B&B where we left the car rental when enjoying the fabulous sites of Ypres. The room and bathroom was very clean and spacious. The beds comfortable, my son is tall and was fine. The owner is very nice and gave excellent recommendations where to eat, to buy things. Breakfast was yummy, we had scrambled eggs with bacon every morning with juice and coffee, with of course delicious croissants... Made our stay in Ypres much more enjoyable. Steve

4Location is 5 min walk from main square and 10 min to Menin Gate. Found free parking within easy walking distance. Booked two twin rooms, nicely decorated and cleanliness was excellent. Shower cubicles in both were rather small, but water hot. Breakfast was good with decent coffee. Ideal place for a short break. We stayed two nights.

5Veronique was very welcoming. Responding to a prior email about my arrival time. This was no problem as she gave me instructions on gaining entry on arrival. A couple of mornings I needed to be out early as I had full days planned. This wasn’t a problem and breakfast was placed out early. My room was on the top floor, a twin with adjoining shower/toilet and small dining area. The room was quite hot, though there was a fan, however I must stress that the days I stayed were extremely hot and humid. The streets of Ypres are cobblestone and create quiet a bit of road noise. However this was hardly noticeable. Parking around the hotel is a blue disc area, and in force from 9am until 6pm. A parking disc can be bought for a couple of Euros in the Tourist Information located in the Cloth Hall near the In Flanders Fields Museum. A disc will give you 3 hours of parking in the blue disc areas. Free parking is also a short walk from the hotel. This B&B Hotel makes an excellent base for visiting the WW1 battlefields and cemeteries.

My En-suite room was clean and comfortable. TV and kettle and refreshments are available. Plenty of parking spaces around. Breakfast is excellent and plentiful. I had a packed lunch every day fpr my 4 days and as I was walking more than 20kms each day it was very welcome. Altogether this B&B was perfect for my needs and I'll stay here again if I can.

5We stayed at the Hortensia B&B for 2 nights. Checking in on Friday evening was very smooth and just as planned. Veronique speaks excellent English. Our room was very spacious, clean, well equipped with comfortable twin beds and a great ensuite shower room. There were the facilities to make tea or coffee downstairs in the breakfast area and free wi fi. Breakfast was plentiful with a great choice of items. This was a convenient B&B with free parking across the road. The owners allowed us to use a parking permit and carefully explained the city requirements regarding its use. They provided a map and restaurant recommendations. It was not obvious that other people were staying except when we saw them at breakfast time. The location of the Hortensia is easy to find on one of the main roads into the city and just a 10 minute walk to the market square for the museum, and Menin Gate. The room we had was at the front of the building and there was street noise as the cars rumbled over the cobbles - this might cause issues at warmer times of the year with the windows open however we would definitely stay here again as we are regular visitors to this area and this is the best accommodation we have had and represented great value for money.

4We visited Ypres for 3 nights in November at this easy to find, well located B&B. The rooms were clean & comfortable, although a bit warm on the top floor. Our room had a velux window but not practical to open when it is raining! There is no parking on the street but there is a free car park just outside the city walls about 200m away, where we left the car for the duration of our visit. The walk to the main square takes about 20 minutes at a good pace and they have a couple of bicycles that you can hire for 10 euros a day, which we made good use of to explore the surrounding area.

4My father and I️ stayed here for 2 nights in the basic twin rooms. We each took 1 room that each had 2 twin beds as that was the cheapest available. The rooms were very quiet and had all the basics we needed for our 2 night stay. I️ do not know if they have air conditioning, we visited in the late fall/early winter, and they do have adjustable radiator type heat for the rooms. The beds were basic but comfortable enough. The rooms were very clean. The showers were small but had good hot water pressure. They offer free WiFi, which worked and had good speed. They also offered a nice breakfast buffet with fruit, cheeses, meats, cereal, and a few other baked goods and condiments, and then the owner also cooked eggs and bacon to order at no additional charge. Very tasty! The owner, Veronique, was very friendly, helpful, speaks English, and overall went the extra mile to make our stay nice. This was a great place to stay while touring the world war 1 monuments and museums/tours. It is within about a 20 minute walk to the leper train station, a 3 minute walk to a bus stop ( which connects to the train if you don’t want to walk). It is also about a 10 minute walk to the town square, field museum and st. Martin Cathedral. The only downsides we encountered were the late check in time of 5pm and the payment method. We arrived closer to noon and happened to catch Veronique at home to let us in. We were fortunate she was there and willing to check us in early, but that could be a problem to consider. Also the credit card machine was on the fritz so we had to pay cash for the stay. There is a bank nearby to get cash, but if you aren’t able use foreign banks for cash withdrawals without a steep fee, this is something you should plan for. I️n my opinion the price for the rooms was a bargain considering the location and basic amenities. I️ would definitely stay here again.

4We stayed there for 4 nights, to visit Ypres and the WW I sites. Very friendly and helpful, clean and nice stay. Breakfast was good. Parking was excellent arranged, a good solution for a busy town and easy and secure access. The only down side I found is the busy road on the B&B is situated on. We had a front room, and had to keep the windows closed overnight not to wake up early. Not sure if the rooms on the back of the B&B had the same experience. For the rest a perfect stay, many thanks.

4This is a small B&B operation at the southern end of the town. Five rooms I believe - clean, simple, and with an efficient and friendly service. Quiet at night, simple 'continental' breakfast with the option of a cooked egg dish to order. We were lent a 'Blue' badge for parking - something akin to a residents' permit enabling limited periods of free parking in designated areas - was very helpful throughout our stay.

4Lovely city. Very comfortable B and B. Wanted to visit Ypres following our holiday in Northern Spain. The B and B is very well situated, it was within easy walking distance of the Menin Gate and other sites of interest in the town. Our room was beautiful and very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was lovely. Only drawback was the noise passing cars made on the cobblestones outside. I am sure this would not be a problem in cooler weather with the windows shut.

5Whilst staying in France we decided to make the short journey over the border to Belgium to see the Menin Gate Ceremony at Ypres. Booked this B&B on-line which was an easy process and the owner, when we met her, spoke very good English. The B&B is a little away from the centre but easy to find with a SATNAV. On street parking is plentiful (paying during daytime, free overnight) nearby. Our room was accessible from 17:00 and was large, modern, very clean with a lovely bathroom. The only drawback was the overnight heat which led to us leaving the window open and having the noise of the street; even at quiet times the sound of car tyres on the road surface was noticeable. Distance from the Grote Markt was not a problem; in fact it was a very pleasant stroll through very nice streets with beautiful old buildings. Breakfast was a wide range of buffet items plus eggs cooked to order if you wanted them. The boiled eggs with soldiers were excellent! We will return and would recommend.

Lots for lunch and the battlefields tour was very informative and moving- even found the gravesite of a great cousin. Would highly recommend this B&B.

4Stayed here in 2009 and was happy to return in 2017. When booking a room back in February, I happened to catch the owner, Veronique, online at the same time. She was quick in her replies and helpful with information. We had only planned on staying one night and the website wouldn't let me book anything because it requested a two-night stay (being a weekend). Veronique was very accommodating by opening up the website for a Saturday night booking. Likewise, she made arrangements for us to get in early by leaving a key in a lock box. We stayed on the second floor this time and the room was very spacious. It overlooked the main street, which was noisy at times with traffic. Without air conditioning, one has to leave the windows open for circulation. As I'd suggested in '09, ceiling fans could go a long way for adjusting the room temperature. Parking is plentiful on the outer perimeter of the city, which is free, but we opted for the paid parking via Hortensia. The lot was underground and about a five minute walk away. Breakfast was what you'd expect, with home cooked eggs made to order. We were certainly well taken care of and I'd be happy to return. The cost was fair and you're a mere 15 minute walk from the Grote Markt and Menin Gate. Some may prefer to be closer to the action but I quite enjoyed walking through the neighbourhoods and enjoying the local landscape.

5We spent 3 nights at B&B Hortensia and were made to feel very welcome. The location of this B&B is perfect, just a 10 minute walk to the beautiful town square but very close to the Lille bridge outside which cars could be parked freely at all times. We were in a triple room with very good size bathroom and enjoyed a tasty breakfast each morning. It was very convenient for the Menin Gate - moving Last Post Ceremony each night at 8pm (hundreds of people attend so get there early) and also for climbing up to walk around the city walls. Veronique gave us advice about restaurants and tours and could have hired bikes to us. We used this b&b as a base for visiting the surrounding area: there were a number of excellent walks around the battlefields/ cemetries with accompanying video footage (leaflets for North, South and East battlefield walks available at the visitor centre) which helped us envisage the scenes from 100 years before.

5I don't often stay in B&Bs, but this one would make me change my patterns. It is first rate in all respects. First, Veronique (sp?) is tireless, efficient, and friendly. Secondly, the room is large and comfortable, spotless too. The breakfast is superb, including eggs cooked to order. Its location is convenient, too, with just a short stroll to the Cloth Hall and not much further to the Menin Gate. Parking might prove a problem, but our luck held and we were able to find a spot across the street and learned from Veronique the ins and outs of Ypres parking. A strong wifi connection is important these days; I'm happy to report that it was excellent here. Ypres/Ieper is a wonderful small city and Hortensia makes it even nicer.

Parking was convenient and the B&B was only about a 10 minute walk from the shops and restaurants. We were greeted and showed to our rooms which were bigger than I was expecting. All very modern and clean. Breakfast both mornings was good. Help yourself cereals and toast and eggs and bacon cooked to order. I would definitely stay here again.

5Bijzonder prettig verblijf gehad in Hortensia.

5Fantastic B and B, Veronique made us very welcome and felt like she was letting us into her home. Even leaving the key for us to pick up. my dad was a little ill and she went out of her way to help and even made up some food for the next day's trip unasked. Perfect

5Booked this B&B at the last minute over the New Year. We called Veronique whilst we were travelling over as we couldn't find anywhere open with availability to eat for New Years Eve. Bless her, she went and found us somewhere to eat - with a fabulous atmosphere too! 5*. Bedroom was lovely, clean, modern and big with a very comfy bed. Breakfast - plentiful and lots of options. Perfectly placed in a quite part of the town close to Menin Gate - no issues with parking (free) close by. Totally recommend coming here.

5We received a warm welcome and were given a map with helpful information on places to visit and restaurant recommendations. Our room was well equipped and comfortable. The breakfast buffet was excellent - fruit, cereals, bread, pastries and cooked items were on offer with home made jam and pancakes. The location is very good - just a short walk from the centre of town, the Menin Gate and the Cloth Hall. Excellent value and highly recommended.

5We were booked to stay for 3 nights from the 9th to the 12th October but I ended up staying until the 14th due to my husbands unexpected illness. Veronique runs the best B&B I have ever stayed in and is the most helpful and kind person you could imagine. With all the stress that I was going through she ensured that it all went smoothly and nothing was too much trouble. I could not have managed without her. The rooms are so comfortable and warm, the breakfast is amazing, and all her visitors are so friendly too. I cannot praise Veronique enough and if you want the best stay in Ypres the B&B Hortensia Is THE place to stay. They deserve a TripAdvisor Excellence Award 2015 and any other prestigious Award. We will stay again as soon as we can once my husband is fit and well.

5Got back from Belgium last night after a trip with another couple. We suggested to our friends to stay at the Hortensia. This was our 2nd visit. We were warmly greeted by Veronique. The B&B is spotlessly clean, and all rooms are en-suite. Highly recommend this B&B, especially if traveling by motorcycle as you can park in the garage. It’s about a 10 minute walk Mennin Gate. 5Got back from Ypres last weekend after a trip with two other couples, we stayed again at the Hortensia, as always we were warmly greeted by Veronique and Michael. The hotel is spotlessly clean, all rooms en-suite and now with a kettle supplied in each room. Breakfast is the usual continental style with meats cheeses breads and cereals, just help yourself, however Veronique also does freshly cooked eggs to your request with bacon and beans if you want, she will also make you up a lunch pack if you want which is a great idea if your off walking or biking around the country lanes. Highly recommend this Hotel, especially if traveling by motorcycle as you can park on the very wide path opposite side of the road, if your a cyclist, they let you keep your own bikes in the garage as well as offering a very reasonable bike hire. We will definitely be back again.

4This B&B is close to the center of Ypres and easily reachable walking from the railway station. Near you can also find lots of free parking. My room was simply furnished but comfortable and very clean. The breakfast was rich and various. The only lack in the service was that towels weren't changed every day. The owner Veronique is cheerful and gentle and can give you all the information concerning Ypres that you need.

5We spent three nights at B&B Hortensia last week. We booked four rooms as a base for a family trip to the WW1 battlefields. The B&B is very well run - the rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. It was warm and humid during our stay so had to sleep with window open - some noise from traffic as you would expect in a city location. Breakfast was plentiful and very fresh. Packed lunches are available which with hindsight we should have requested as the battlefields and cemetaries are often in remote areas. Excellent value for money and will use again for future trips to Ypres.

The en suite rooms are clean, warm and well thought out with cable TV, hairdryer, kettle and lashings of hot water. It is situated by the Lille gate in Ypres so parking is convenient and free. 4Just returned from a four night stay at B&B Hortensia. It is a lovely house which the front is used as guest rooms and the family live in the rear extension. We were welcomed by the owner Veronique who made us feel at home immediately. She was extremely helpful in giving us advice on good local restaurants and on the local area, where to park for free, and where the sites I wanted to visit where. She lent us Maps and guides and also gave us a voucher book which gave discount into the main attractions and museums. The room was very clean and spacious, I had asked for a room at the back, as I had read others comments on road noise, and this was a good decision as the cobbled street outside is a main road into Ypres Centre. We were welcomed every morning with a great spread for breakfast - fresh bread, cheese, ham etc etc. You will also be offered eggs in any style you wish, the scrambled eggs were great with beans and bacon. On our last morning we had pancakes. This is a well placed B&B, in a quiet part of Ypres, but its only an easy, flat, ten minute walk to the Centre were you will find plenty to do and see, and of course attend the Menin Gate Ceremony.

5Stayed at the Hortenia with some biking friends while remembering and paying our respects during the WW1 centenery. It's ideally placed in the centre of Ypres to visit all the sites of interest. The Menin Gate is only a 10 minute walk through the cobbled streets. Veronique looked after all our needs and was a great host. The rooms were well catered for and clean. Breakfast was good enough to set us bikers up for the day. As the roads are cobbled, the traffic does get quite noisy especially in the morning. Our room was road side but with the windows open due to the heat. All in all, highly recommended.

5Me myself and 3 other gentlemen (debatable for 2 of them) arrived about 4 clock.knowing check in time was 5 o clock (as stated when booking) we headed for the ramparts pub/museum for some well deserved drinks (parking no problem ! Across the road) we stayed there sampling the lovely beer on offer ,word of warning ,the toilets round the back have been designed to smell of mustard gas to replicate the stench in the trenches so gas masks are provided if you ask behind the bar.this did not deter us as we wanted to experience what our soldiers went through on our second trip to Flanders. B&B Hortensia: When we arrived we had a lovely welcome from Veronique,we were shown to our rooms, two of us were on top floor(three shorts flights of stairs with rest space in between each if you are not good with stairs (as I am)but I had no problem . After dumping our gear in the rooms we were welcomed with coffee /tea and cake, lovely a great start to our three day stay. Breakfast: As usual when you are on the continent the normal choice, bread, cakes, cereal, jam, yoghurt, cheese ,ham etc........just remember it is not the UK and expect this . Also we were given scrambled egg with slice of bacon and beans..once again lovely. If you wanted a boiled egg or two you were also given the choice, which one of our group did and commented that they were boiled perfectly (quite evident as most of it ran down his chin !!) They breakfast covered everyone's needs. More than our soldiers got in the trenches and no bullets flying overhead! As someone who is in to motorcycling I loved the shelf with the nice helmets on display. Talking about helmets,a couple of residents decided to whistle and talk very loud at 8 o clock the first morning, waking us up if you are reading this thanks ! Packed lunch: We usually try and find somewhere to eat on our drive around the battlefields which can be difficult especially in the remote areas,we could of dined on raw potatoes and carrots from the fields but that could of been dangerous as an old mills bomb looks like a potato. We paid 5 Euros each for packed lunch of 2 filled rolls fruit, water, fruit juice and health bar.FANTASTIC so we could stop anywhere for lunch without leaving our route. The room: Spotlessly clean comfy beds television, kettle, shower and a hair dryer which we didn't use so women I don't know what horsepower it was,the bloke whistling at 8 in morning nearly got shrapnel wounds from it ! In a nutshell Veronique recommended places to eat,we went to one place where the food was superb (can't remember name) but food was superb slow cooked pork shoulder was to die for (wish the whistler had!!!) We couldn't get into others as they were full because we were late going out. Chicken soup: We had great difficulty finding somewhere that served chicken soup,as one of the group just loves chicken soup ,so if chicken soup is your favourite I suggest catching one from the many free wandering ones in the country and cook it in an old crater! Noise: Its a cobbled street everywhere.does not matter where you stay in Ypres you will get road noise so stop moaning.wear earplugs for god sake. Much quieter than what our soldiers had to endure,I have sensitive hearing,I can hear a fly fart from 2 yards but cobbled road noise didn't bother me (few pints of hoogharden does the job better than earplugs) Overall,: The hortensia is a great place to stay ,just 50 yards from lille gate and 10 minutes walk from the centre of Ypres. Diolch yn fawr iawn Veronique am gwneud fy penwythnos ,gobeithio aros gyda chi rhyw dro eto (Welsh) Thank you very much Veronique for making our weekend, hope to stay with you again some time .

5Found this B&B through all the good reviews on the site and our choice was correct. Veronique is an excellent host and keen to ensure you make the most of your visit to the area. Just far enough out of the centre to be quite but 5 minute walk takes you to the main square. Recent changes to car parking arrangements mean you can no longer park adjacent to the property other than to drop off bags. Not easy to spot but drive through the bridge cross the roundabout and there is a road to your right and there is new free parking behind the group of shops 2-3 minute walk.

5Unbelievable, but Ypres is actually a modern city. It has been rebuilt to mirror its previous existence over the last hundred years after near total annhilation following the Great War of 1914 - 1918, when it sustained devastating bombardment in its position in the Ypres Salient. Situated within the old City wall of that part of the remains of the old Vauban Fort, still standing and restored after the Great War. Located within easy walking distance of the Cloth Hall (5 minutes) and the Menin Gate (8 minutes and a must see when there - the Last Post). We were told to treat the house as if we were home and the owners meant it. Bedroom with ensuite shower-room was recently decorated and comfortable in a minimalist style and even had a kettle provided (as well as free wifi connection). Well priced tariff gave an inclusive continental breakfast, but we were also offered scrambled eggs and bacon! The house offers packed lunches, cycle hire and even trips around the battlefields can be arranged if desired. on street parking is chargeable between 0900 hrs and 1800 hrs but free parking is available on off streets if

It is well situated, well priced, friendly, very clean and as good as any B&B we have found in Flanders. All in all we find it a great place to stay and the on street parking has always worked for us. For the less mobile avoid the second floor rooms as the stairs can be a bit of a trial. Beyond that there is nothing negative and even the showers are effective.

4A mate and I recently stayed her for 2 nights whilst on a cycling trip to Belgium. The lady who runs the B&B was very helpful and could see we were in need of refreshment when we arrived after a 58 mile cycle from the ferry and so she made us tea/coffee and cake. The B&B is basic but clean and the rooms are a decent size. One odd thing though - there were kettles in the rooms but no tea making facilities or cups etc?! Breakfast was really nice, all the usual things for a continental breakfast, cold meats, cheese, pastries, cereal, fruit etc. The host also asks if you want eggs freshly cooked, and if you do the choice is scrambled or fried. Again, a bit of an oddity is that you automatically get a rasher of bacon if you ask for scrambled egg but you don't if you ask for fried??! Must be a Belgian or Flemish thing I guess. The B&B also has a locked garage for cycles, motor bikes etc - a bonus. One thing to note though is the traffic noise. The cobbles outside the hotel seem to amplify tyre noise and surprisingly the road outside the hotel was very busy from about 6.30am until very late - this meant that sleeping with the windows open (we were fortunate to have very good weather) is almost impossible if you want to sleep.

5We picked this B+B for an over night stop on the way back from Lake Garda by Motorbike. This is a great B+B in a nice location close to the centre of town. It is on a main road so there is some traffic noise, get a room at the back if possible, the traffic does quieten down at night though. Room was clean and bed comfy,, the stairs are a bit steep though. We reserved a place in the garage, parking in the street is pay and display although some other motorcycles parked in the cycle parking across the road and didn't encounter a problem. Breakfast was excellent, Ypres is a great place to explore lots of history and the Menin Gate ceremony is worth seeing but get there early to get to the front.

A packed lunch is available for a minimal charge. Bikes are also available. We each rented one for the entire day, and had a wonderful time touring a circuit on the map that Veronique provided to us. Parking as always can be a bit of a hit and miss affair but shouldnt detract from a very warm welcome from the hosts, large, clean accomodation and excelletn breakfast. Ideal for first timers to the area as they are very willing to help those new to Flanders with maps, and advice, and a comfortable retreat for those of us lucky enough to be considered old flanders sweats. Excellent value for money to boot. In summer it can get hot, if you have a room overlooking the street, remember cobbled roads make a lot of noise at night and although an open window is nice the nise can interrupt your sleep.

5I was made to feel very welcome by the owners of this B&B, who gave me information and advice on what to see and do in Ypres as well as on my next stop at Wissant. The room was clean and comfortable and in an ideal location near the ramparts. I enjoyed the breakfast which had a good variety of food as well as the lunch pack that was made for me for that day. I would highly recommend a stay at Hortensia for anyone visiting Ypres.

5Our group of four retired firefighter returned to the Hortensia having discovered it 3 years earlier. It is an excellent base from which to explore. Véronique, who speaks perfect English and Michaël provided the same warm welcome that we had remembered. Spotlessly clean rooms, breakfast that would satisfy the biggest appetites and a helpfulness that exceeds expectations on all levels. Véronique recommended restaurants to fit our budget and even telephoned to reserve tables on our behalf. We were all delighted with the food and value for money. As for the Hortensia, the old saying of 'never go back' does not apply here. We will return again. If you are looking for a B&B which is within walking distance of the Menin Gate, Ypres museum and a wide choice of restaurants, look no further, the Hortensia is a real gem.

Warm aanbevolen.

5The B&B Hortensia is a beautiful, friendly, clean place to stay, when visiting Ypres. It's inside the walls of Ypres, right next to the Rijselpoort, and close to everything (cathedral, meningate, market, etc...). It has hosts (Veronique and Michael) that do everything in their power to make your stay an experience to remember. The rooms are clean and tidy. Everything is provided for: towels, shampoo, shower-gel, hairdryer, etc...Their breakfast is fantastic: several kinds of fresh bread, homemade jam, locally produced applejuice and honey... bacon and eggs, or a boiled egg. On sunday morning homemade, warm pancakes. Fresh coffee... there was tea, chocolatemilk,etc... Our hosts were very friendly, and helped us with advice concerning trips, restaurants, etc... In one word: FANTASTIC and without a doubt one of the best adresses in Ypres to stay.

5My dad and I stayed in the B&B Hortensia on a recent trip to Ieper (8-12th April 2013) - we had an amazing time. Veronique & Micheal were brilliant hosts from the outset of our stay; they know their stuff too and were very helpful throughout, providing discount passes to WW1 places of interest, maps and restaurant tips. The B&B is great - comfy beds, good showers and decent sized rooms. It has a fantasic location too with free parking spaces just around the corner from the bakery across the road :) The breakfast was excellent - food for every taste, as and much as you could manage. Each morning our preferred hot drink was waiting for us, which I thought was a great personal touch. Veronique also takes an interest in all her guests and keeps upto speed on all the adventures they embark upon daily! Highly recommended to everyone who visits Ieper. We will certainly be staying here again in future visits.

4From the outset, Veronique was a great hostess. She spent considerable time, over coffee and cake, giving us useful tourist information about WW1 sites, etc. Our room and bathroom were both a good size and we didn't hear any church bells! She also suggested free parking places very close by as the spaces opposite are metered. The breakfast was good with plenty of choice. There are kettles in each room. An easy walk into Ypres where there is an excellent museum called 'In Flanders Fields'. If we went back to the area we'd definitely stay at Hortensia again.

5We arrived just after 17:00 and warmly received by Veronique. After been shown to our room we were then made a lovely coffee and asked whether we had any questions? Any good restaurants in the area was the first. Veronique suggested De Ruyffelaer and courteously arranged a reservation. Incidentally the food was tremendous so go there if you want traditionaln Flemish food. The stay was lovely; very relaxed and clean rooms along with a great shower. The breakfast really set us up for the day and was as good as anything you'll find. Overall a great stay. Would I recommend? Absolutely 100% yes. Now that I've found Hortensia there's no need to go anywhere else. Stay here!!

Veronique welcomed us and provided coffee and a snack while sharing information about Ieper with us and making a recommendation for dinner. We felt instantly at home and settled into our larger than usual bedrooms. The location is very convenient for walking the Ramparts along to the Menin Gate, visiting the main square and the In Flanders Fields museum. 4I spent 3 nights at the Hortensia following a personal recommendation from a friend. The room was spotless, the welcome friendly and the breakfast excellent. The location is perfect for the Ramparts 1914-18 museum, Ramparts Cemetery and for strolling around the Ramparts to the Menin Gate. Parking if free just around the corner. It is a 10 minute walk to the centre of town and to the Menin Gate. I had a room facing the back and I was not disturbed by any traffic. Anyone wanting a lie-in will be faced by church bells at 8.00am. The owners are friendly, efficient and keen to help BUT they are not hugely knowledgable on the 1914-18 war. The other guests at the B&B were also not 1914-18 enthusiasts. When I stay in the area I want to stay in placesw where other guests are keen 1914-18 enthusiasts. There are no 1914-18 books/photos/documents in the B&B. This may be a positive for some guests. The rooms are functional. The TV was tiny but I did not want to stay in the room and watch TV. My 3 days in the twon were superb.

5This is a very comfortable place to stay within easy reach of the centre of Ieper. It takes about 10-15 minutes to walk to the main square and the Menin Gate. We walked there through the town but you can also walk along the city wall It is just inside the city wall so it is easy to find by car. You need to pay a moderate amount to park in the street outside the Hortensia but there is plenty of free parking nearby; the area felt safe and we had no concerns about leaving our car out in the street. Veronique and Michael are perfect hosts. Veronique gave us coffee and cake on arrival and made us feel very welcome. She also gave us some good information about local restaurants and the Last Post ceremony. The bedrooms were very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good. A good selection of breads, pastries, meats, cheeses etc., as well as scrambled eggs and bacon. There is a selection of drinks available in a fridge in the garage. You can help yourself, write what you take in a notebook and settle the cost when you check out. We only stayed here fore one night at the end of a journey back home from Austria to the UK. But we definitely plan to return to Ieper for a longer stay and we will definitely stay at the Hortensia.

5We stopped here at the end of a 3 week trip from the UK on a motorcycle, via France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany to Colditz and back and so this was our last stop... we really left the best for last! Firstly we were going to stop in Dunkerque as our last place over the water, however after asking the group for THE BIKER GUIDE on facebook for a place to recommend a chap said to stop in Ypres mainly to attend the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing and to stop here at Hortensia as it was a great place with the added bonus of having a garage for the bike. When we got there, we were a little weathered and tired so the lovely welcome from Veronique and Michael , the best coffee I'd had in weeks and a piece of cake on arrival was heaven sent. Modern, spotless and comfortable rooms. Also an honesty fridge containing various drinks in the main house - more people should do this. We could have gone to the supermarket, but didnt bother and just took from the fridge and paid on check out. Great breakfasts, with fresh bread from the local bakers, various cheese, meat, cerials and preserves, along with eggs and bacon, cooked to order. A great find for us to end our trip, ideal for the Menin Gate Memorial (about a 10 minute walk), with the added bonus of garaged parking for our beloved BMW Motorcycle.

5This is the second time we have stayed at Hortensia (third time for my husband) and again Veronique and Michael made us very welcome. The rooms are light and airy, the beds comfortable and the shower powerful. There was plenty of choice for breakfast and the bread rolls were particularly delicious. Good bars and restaurants in the vicinity. The Menin Gate ceremony, as always, a must visit. Unfortunately we didn't get chance to visit the re-vamped In Flanders Field museum but hopefully our next visit will rectify that - with a further stay at Hortensia of course!

5Two middle-aged blokes with three nights away from wives and children had a chance to explore Ypres and the Salient battlefields. Hortensia was the ideal place from which to do this. We were made very welcome by Veronique as soon as we arrived. Despite being at the southern end of the walled city, we were surprised at how quick and easy it was to walk into the Grote Markt and see the main sites from the guest house. The location enabled us to admire the buildings of the city at greater length and to get on to the ramparts as a pleasant alternative to reaching the Menin Gate ceremony. Parking was very simple in streets parallel to Rijselstraat (we never paid for parking once during our stay - excellent country) and easy to drive to and from. Breakfasts were most appreciated, an excellent start to the day. Rooms were clean and convenient and the shower was satisfyingly powerful! Price was well matched to this useful and pleasant holiday venue: I would certainly want to stay here again if I was able to return.

As others have said, the accommodation is modern, very clean and is close to the centre of the Ipre. Space had already been made available for the 2 motorbikes in their garage, so we wheeled them straight in. Veronique showed us our rooms and advised us where to eat locally and gave us our keys to the door. En-suite bathroom has shower (no bath) with towels. Bedding is comfortable and clean. 5If you want a good, clean, bright and welcoming b&b in Ypres (Ieper)... you need look no further than the Hortensia. The young hosts, Veronique and Michael, couldn't have been more friendly and helpful - even to the extent of providing maps and discount tickets for our travels. The b&b is perfectly situated - 100 metres or so from the ancient city wall, and around eight minutes walk from the main square and its restaurants, and the evocative Menin Gate. Nearby parking is easy (and free), as well. The six spacious en-suite guest rooms are bright and spotlessly clean - and the hosts serve a decent breakfast. If you want a cold drink of any sort, you just help yourself from the communal fridge downstairs and tell Veronique or Michael later. That simple element of trust sums this b&b up completely. To be thoroughly recommended.

5This is a very clean and comfortable B&B with modern interior and decor. It is run by a very pleasant and helpful couple called Michael & Veronique. Nothing was too much trouble for them and as we were the only guests they were very flexible e.g. offering us any room and even texting me in the morning to say we could have an earlier breakfast than the time we'd arranged. The room we had was very large by any standard with a pleasant en-suite room and laminate flooring. The beds consisted of two twin beds together and were very comfortable. The large room we chose was at the front of the building and although it didn't affect us, there was some traffic noise despite it appearing to be very quiet in the evening so I'd suggest requesting a rear room if you're a light sleeper.Veronique offered to take us back to the station in their car after check-out if we wanted which wasn't necessary as we were being met by friends. Breakfast was a good Continental selection of ham, cheese, rolls & cereals with plentiful supply of toast, tea and coffee. Veronique also cooked us eggs and bacon. I would highly recommend the Hortensia as a perfect location for Ieper (Ypres) and as a base for exploring all of the Great War attractions around the region. It is a 10 minute walk to the Menim Gate and the Grote Markt,

5We are an Australian and NZ couple and can report that this was a wonderful B&B. We were recommended it by another hotel in Ieper which was booked out, (lucky for us). Previous reviewers have said it all - but we repeat - Veronique and Michael run a great business providing clean, modern good value accommodation. The rooms are big and comfortable. The location is unsurpassed if you want value accommodation with evening food, pub and transport nearby. Close enough to the Menin Gate to walk easily but far enough away from Grand Place to not be right in amongst tourist throngs the whole time. Walking distance to train station where all local / regional buses run from / too. Also certain buses available a few hundred metres away in either direction of Hortensia on Rijselsestraat. We received genuinely helpful assistance provided by Veronique - not pushy; just helpful - ask about Lionels tours because he is an absolute gem as well. The generous breakfast is a wonderful start to the day and there is a pizza place down the road toward Grand Place, open evenings. If you want to experience Belgium beer the best pub in our opinion is also just steps down the road from Hortensia B&B towards the Ieper Gate....called Klein Rijsel http://rampartswarmuseumypres.com/Engels/English.html It is also a museum but don't let this put you off going inside for a drink. You don't have to go through the museum to have a beer - it is a true pub. Really really good, fabulous beer menu and the owners Jan and Fabienne are enthusiastic hosts catering mainly to locals but very hospitable with information on all beers if you are interested in this. Belgium beers are remarkably good quality and in this pub a good price. Our experience at Hortensia was originally going to be only 2nights but we extended to 5nights we were so happy and comfortable with our surroundings. Ieper is a fantastic place and a great ambassador for Belgium and its people.

3The Hortensia is a pleasant B&B in a handy location on the southern entry to the town. We had two rooms that had recently been repainted and, while they were simply furnished, were warm and comfortable. Breakfast each day was excellent - individally cooked with fresh breads from the bakery down the road. Central Ieper was an easy walk, and the old town walls and moat were nearby. The owners were new and still finding their feet, but were very helpful with suggestions on places to visit etc. The only concern was the noise from traffic on the busy cobblestone street. I think in summer a room facing the street would be a pain, as you would need the window open for ventilation and the coblestones really do make a racket. Apart from that, no complaints, but I think I would look for a place off the main road if I was visiting in summer.

The rooms were beautiful and spotlessly clean. One of our rooms overlooked the rooftops at the back of the house and the other room overlooked the street - which was a little more noisy. 5This is a superb B&B just inside the ramparts at Ypres. Very friendly owners who cannot do enough for you. Rooms are very clean and the breakfast is to die for!! In easy walking distance of the centre of Ypres and the ramparts are very close by which is a lovely walk to the Menin gate. There is also a little local pub round the corner, very handy. Veronique (the owner) offers a packed lunch for 4 euro which is a bargain as you get so much. A good idea if you are exploring the surrounding areas. She can also arrange tours for you with a very nice guy who really knows his stuff. All in all it is a superb place to stay, super clean, super friendly and very very comfortable.

5This was our second stay in B&B Hortensia and Michaël & Véronique were as accommodating as ever! The rooms are clean and comfortable and in a prime position close to the town centre and with the beautiful ramparts minutes away. We used the rental bikes from the B&B which are a brilliant way to get around, and Véronique kindly helped us plan our routes and made recommendations on where to go. Nothing seems to much trouble at the B&B Hortensia and we are already looking forward to our next trip!

4Ours was a one night stay on a fleeting visit. The room was very comfortable and with free parking nearby we were able to check-in and following a welcoming cuppa stroll back into Ypres well in time to attend the ceremony at the Menin Gate. An excellent breakfast the following day set-us-up for another day's exploration before returning to Dunkirk to catch the ferry home

5Veronique welcomed us with tea/coffee and cake on arrival. The rooms were spotless and very comfortable. Breakfast was wonderful - lovely breads, yoghurt, cheese, meats, fruit and scrambled or boiled eggs. On our first morning, as there were a few bread rolls left (another party of guests having cancelled at the last minute) Veronique asked if we would like to make use of them for our lunch and gave us more cheese and meats to make up sandwiches. We were also given a booklet with money off vouchers for local museums etc. Before we left for a day out Veronique told us about the local area and places of interest to visit together with recommendations for local restaurants. We wouldn't hesitate booking with them again - a true home from home.

5We stayed here for 2 nights of our trip, and B&B Hortensia is a lovely place to stay. The rooms are simple and the hosts - Veronique and Michael - are very friendly and welcoming. This is an ideal place to stay if you want the centre of Ypres, and i would recommend to anyone. Breakfast has some of the nicest bread around, with a good choice, and they even offer the added bonus of scrambled egg with bacon. It is only about a 15min walk from the main square in Ypres, and easy to find by car. If you plan to stay in Ypres, I have no hesitation in recommending this B&B!

5This b and b is easy to find and very well located if you wish to stay near the centre of Ieper. Veronique and Michael are very welcoming hosts and cater for all your needs. The rooms are simple but provide you with everything you need. The breakfast is substantial both continental and offering bacon and scrambled eggs; with some of the best bread you will taste!! It is based about 15 minutes walk from the centre, with plenty to see when you get there. I would recommend Hortensia to anyone wishing to stay in Cenral Ieper

5We have stayed at the Hortensia several times over the past four years and throroughly recommend it. The new hosts are very pleasant and helpful and we enjoyed the welcome with tea and cake. the rooms are spotless and the breakfast extremely satisfying. Free parking nearby and a secure garage for cycles is an added bonus. It's a great place for exploring Ypres and environs, or for a short stay between cross channel ferries and further destinations.

5I had an extremely enjoyable stay here on my own in 2006 and wanted to show my wife the delights of the hotel and the town. There has been a change of management but the same high standards of cleanliness, friendliness and helpfulness remain. The rooms are modern and simply but effectively furnished. The welcome cup of tea (and cake) upon arrival were appreciated, as were the breakfasts. There is no lift but help is readily available for carrying cases. It is a ten minute walk to the main square and a further five to the Menin Gate for the evening ceremony. Nothing was too much trouble for the hostess, who even provided us with the ingredients to make sandwiches to take away on the morning of our departure. On any future return to Ieper (Ypres) this would be my accommodation of choice.

5I travelled to B & B Hortensia with my husband and 3 kids. We would thoroughly recommend anyone to stay there. the accommodation was spotlessly clean, and the breakfast excellent. The owners are extremely friendly, and will do anything they can to help you get the most out of your stay. We had booked breakfast for 8.30 one morning, but overslept until 9.45! We assumed we had missed breakfast, but Veronique insisted on serving us, saying she was glad we had had such a good sleep! I enquired about the use of an iron, and she offered me her own personal iron & ironing board; nothing was too much trouble. The B & B is ideally situated for an evening stroll to the Menin Gate ceremony, at 8pm each night; not to be missed. To sum up, the Hortensia was the perfect choice of accommodation for my family and I, and I would not hesitate to recommend it or use it again.

4Royal British Legion Riders Branch trip. We travelled as a group of 27 staying in various places, 8 of us stayed at the Hortensia at it was a very good choice. Travelling by motorcycle the hosts were more than helpful in moving items enabling us to get 6 bikes in the garage, safely locked away for the night. We were greeted with copious amounts of coffee, much appreciated after a day in the saddle. The rooms are well appointed and clean with access to drinks is available free of charge, on suite is wellmaintained and hot water a plenty - even had BBC1 on the tv. Breakfast was lovely and plentiful, if you can fill us up you can fill anyone. Michael & Veronique couldn't be more helpful and we will definately be back. You won;'t be dissappointed.

5A very clean, quiet and pleasant B&B, that is a 10 minute walk away from the city centre. It is in an excellent location, if you are visiting the area to tour the Ypres battlefields and cemeteries. Whilst it is situated on a main street, the surrounding area is very quiet. No problems with parking and there are a few local (and reasonably priced) shops nearby, to stock-up with provisions, if you are planning day-trips. The hosts, Michaël & Véronique, were very helpful and assisted with the usual questions / problems that you encounter in a town that is new to you - where to eat, etc. I have no hesitation in recommending the Hortensia - in fact I have already done so, to various colleagues!

4We stayed two nights at the Hortensia during a visit to Ypres and the cemeteries. While there one of our party suffered an accident and needed medical help: the hostess at the Hortensia could not have been kinder or more helpful - serving our injured friend in her room giving us directions to the hospital and ringing ahead to let them know we were coming. We were extremely impressed and grateful. But putting that event aside the Hortensia is excellent value, 10 minutes from the Square, quiet, near the beautiful ramparts at the Lille gate (the only original gate left in the walls), spacious rooms and an excelllent breakfast (eggs boiled to perfection). We will certainly return - probably for the Cat Festival in 2012, if not before.

They even managed to help with a visit to the Menin Gate and were very knowledgable about the local area. Excellent breakfast, no shortage of coffee or food. Would reccommend and will definately be staying again.

4The Hortensia is very clean, comfortable, and in a good location. Andre, the owner, is very helpful, and good at recommending places to visit.. When I arrived, late in the evening, he offered a cup of tea, which was needed after a long journey from the UK. The room was very comfortable, with an en-suite bathroom (with a good shower) and a TV with some British TV channels (BBC 1, BBC 2, and ITV). The breakfasts were very good, with cereals, jams, fresh breads and rolls. I would recommend the Hortensia for anyone wanting simple B&B accommodation in Ieper.

4Right next to the battlements of Ypres (where my great grandfather was posted during the 3rd battle of Paschendale in Oct 1917) the b&b is very conveniently located to explore the region. A 20 min walk into the centre of Ypres, with plenty free on street parking available. Rooms were spotless and very clean, a functional place, if a little sparse. Good breakfast, a great idea to have individual toasters at each table. Andre was helpful and very pleasant, a good host.

The rooms are immaculate and very comfortable. Breakfast in typically continental (after all we are in Belgium!) with plenty to choose from. In comparison to alternative acommodation in Ypres, the Hotel Hortensia is unbeatable! Great stay and greaty value!

4Two thumbs up for this place. Andre, the owner, was very accommodating and helpful - readily volunteering information about the area. We had a twin room on the upper floor (no lift/elevator so be prepared to carry bags) which was clean and roomy. I suspect it gets warm up there but it rained the night we stayed, which kept the temperature comfortable. Investing in a ceiling fan to cool the room down might be a good idea, but again, we had no problems. Breakfast was simple and typical of what you'd find on the continent (cereals, yogurt, breads, cheese etc.). Location-wise, Hortensia in on the fringe of Ypres but within a 15 minute walk of the Grote Market where museums, cafes and shopping are plentiful. Very lovely town, Ypres and the Hortensia gives you a taste of the local life. [Try the pizza at Poppys in town!] I would have preferred to check in earlier but the typical check-in time at Hortensia is after 5pm, FYI. All in all, a pleasant experience and I'd certainly return if the opportunity was there.

4For a one night stay to visit war cemeteries and the Menin Gate this would be hard to beat. Very clean and well priced. Host welcomed us with a cup of tea when we arrived in the rain. Upstairs room fine, although floor creaked slightly. Bathroom good; breakfast fine. André is an interesting man, who speaks excellent English. DIscount if you pay in cash (€64 for twin room).

4I found Hortensia by internet search and booked via email with Andre. This is alway a tricky way of doing it as you never know what you will find but i must say we were delighted. 3 of us arrived on our motorcycles and were able to park them in Andre's garage for the duration of our stay. My room was clean and comfortable (all that i had hoped for), and at a good price. I found Andre to be pleasant and helpful. The breakfast could do with a little variety but that's splitting hairs really. Would definately stay again.

2As soon as we walked in we were told to close doors and turn off lights, not a good start. We were offered a cup of tea as we were soaking wet, the B&B was immaculately clean although we hit another problem NO HEATING when it was turned on it was so low you could hardly feel it. Andre was a bit of a Jeckyll and Hyde. On the one hand very helpful and on the other following you around making sure you would not dirty his floors even at one point following us around with a sweeping brush which made us feel very uncomfortable. The last straw was being accused of stealing one of his broken umberellas. I don't think we'll be going back.

5My friend and I stayed at Hortensia for two days this June, then three days in July. I have stayed at three places--hotels and b and bs-- in Ypres over the years and this B and B is definitely the best, both in terms of location and value for money. Hortensia is just up from the Lille Gate, from which you can walk to the Menin gate and town square through a picturesque park on the city ramparts. There is a bread store opposite and several food markets in the vicinity, in addition to easy access to the town's many restaurants and tea rooms. Andre is a most welcoming and helpful host, checking in with each guest periodically as to how he can help make the visit better and offering advice based on his many years' residence there. The rooms are spotless and tastefully decorated, the beds excellent. There is a good variety of choices at breakfast and plenty of parking nearby. I can't stress enough what a great deal you are getting if you book your stay here.

5I stayed at the Hortensia in Ieper/Ypres for four nights at the beginning of September 2007 and booked our rooms after browsing the web and finding the Hortensia web site while looking for accomodation in Ieper. The purpose of our stay was to spend a day each on the following: 1) Sites in Belgium of First World War history. 2) Sites in northern France of Second World War history. 3) A short visit to Brugge (Bruges) and Gent (Ghent). Hortensia is within easy reach of all of these by car. (Note: visitors to Brugge and Gent will need far more than a few hours in each, my visit was a repeat visits to specific parts of those fine cities, being a regular visitor to both. If you haven't been before, allow at least a full day in each, maybe several days depending on your interests). We found the rooms clean and comfortable and the breakfasts good. Ample safe car parking was available in the streets around the B&B, we had no worries in this respect at all. The B&B is about 10 minute walk from the main square in Ieper and the Menin Gate (where the Last Post is played at 8pm every night of the year). The railway station is about 15-20 minutes walk away. The B&B is situated very close to one of the gates through the town wall and it is possible to take a pleasant walk around the town ramparts to the Menin Gate or the railway station, as well as slightly more direct walks along the streets. Mention must be made of Andre, the proprietor of the Hortensia. A very helpful and friendly gentleman - his care for his guests make this an excellent and highly recommended place to stay.

4We stayed at B&B Hortensia for 3 nights on the 2nd leg of our family whirlwind European vacation. The location is good, nice & quiet, and only a few minutes' walk from the downtown area. The rooms/facilities were spotless and very well equiped. The breakfasts were excellent and ample. Our host, Andre, was most hospitable and offered valuable help and advice in planning some of our daily excursions. Liked Ypres very much and enjoyed B&B Hortensia as well.

Andre was very helpful. he gave us his own map book to follow or war trip with and recommended a great resturant called 'Old Toms', which was fantastic, (we went there all 3 nights) please try the local beer called Yperman as well. we are already planning a return and this would be our Ypres accomadation without a doubt.

5We stayed in this B&B for two nights in June 2006. It's in a lovely house at the edge of the city centre (5 mins walk to main square). It's located just next to some of the old city ramparts and gate. Rooms are simple, nice and clean. Beds are comfy, bathrooms spotless with a good shower. Very quiet. André who runs the place is very friendly and helpful. He'll give you lots of leaflets, maps and information, and his own personal recommendations. Breakfast is good with cereals, yoghurts, toast and fresh breads daily. Really good value at just EUR58 for a double.
